Using AI responsibly

Where AI fits into activATAR, and the guardrails we hold ourselves to.

We think AI can genuinely help students, but only when it's used carefully, especially with young people's work. This page is honest about where we are and where we're heading.

Where things stand today

activATAR's core learning content — questions, worked solutions and notes — is written and reviewed by our team, not generated automatically for students on the fly. Our motivation features, analytics and dashboards don't make automated decisions about students.

Where we use AI

We use AI-assisted marking for long-response questions on past papers, so students get faster feedback on the kind of extended answers that are otherwise slow to mark. When a student submits an answer, three things are sent to our AI provider: the question, the marking criteria, and the answer text, along with a random internal account number used only for usage accounting. Names, email addresses and contact details are never sent.

The provider is named on our third-party services page, which sets out exactly what it receives and where it processes it.

Our guardrails

  • Assistive, not the final word. AI-assisted marking is there to guide practice and give feedback, not to produce official grades. It supports learning; it doesn't replace a teacher's judgement.
  • Student work isn't used to train external models. We don't hand student responses to third parties to train their AI.
  • Transparent about limits. AI feedback can be wrong. We make clear that students should treat it as a helpful guide and verify anything important, and we act on feedback when something's off.
  • Human oversight. We review how the feature performs and refine it, rather than leaving it to run unchecked.

Keeping this current

As AI features develop, we'll keep this page updated so students, parents and schools always know how AI is being used in the platform. If you have questions or concerns, reach us at hello@activatar.com.au.

For schools: if AI use is part of your procurement review, we're glad to talk through our approach and guardrails in detail.
