What we collect and why

The information activATAR holds, the reason we need it, and what we deliberately leave alone.

Our starting point is restraint: we gather the least we can while still running the platform well and giving students and teachers something genuinely useful. Here's the full picture.

The information we hold

TypeExamplesPurpose
Account basicsName, school email, password, year levelCreating a secure account and placing a student in the right cohort.
School contextSchool, class, subjects, and role for staffConnecting students to their class and giving teachers their dashboard.
Learning activityQuestions attempted, accuracy, time spent, streaks, progress by topicTracking progress, tailoring practice, and running the motivation features.
Technical basicsDevice and browser type, IP address, session and error logsKeeping the platform secure and working, and fixing faults.

What we leave alone

  • We don't collect sensitive information as defined by the Privacy Act, such as health, racial, or religious details. There's no reason for us to.
  • We don't take payment details from students. School pilots are invoiced to the school, so no student card information is stored.
  • We don't gather data from outside the platform, buy data, or build profiles from other sources.

How the information is used

  • Running and personalising the platform — the right content, progress tracking, streaks, leaderboards and analytics.
  • Giving teachers a clear picture — engagement and accuracy across a class, so students can be supported sooner.
  • Keeping things reliable and safe — diagnosing faults, preventing misuse, maintaining the service.
  • Staying in touch — account and service messages, and the occasional product update.

We don't sell personal information, and we won't repurpose it beyond the uses above without consent.

De-identified figures

We sometimes work with aggregated, de-identified numbers — figures that can't be traced back to any individual — for improving the platform, internal research, and published statistics. No student is ever named or made identifiable in anything we publish without separate, explicit consent arranged through their school.

Students under 18

Many activATAR users are under 18. For school accounts, the school holds the relationship with its students' data and looks after any parent notices or consents its own policies call for, while activATAR processes that data on the school's behalf. Individual (non-school) accounts are intended for students who are 18 or older, or who have their parent or guardian's permission — which we ask users to confirm when they sign up.

The formal version: our Privacy Policy sets out collection, use and disclosure in full legal detail. This page is the readable summary.
